An adequate supply of disposable diapers can cost a family over $100 per month. In low-income households, babies often spend the entire day or longer in a single diaper because the family cannot afford to buy an adequate supply of diapers. Without clean diapers, babies are too uncomfortable, and sometimes too unhealthy, to play and learn. Parents can also become disheartened and disconnected when they struggle to care for their babies.

The first annual Town of Branford and United Way Touch-A-Truck event brought in over 25,000 diapers from 1,300 Branford residents who supported the event, making it a wonderful family outing, while raising awareness and collecting diapers. Covidien Surgical Devices whose global headquarters are in North Haven and their U.S headquarters in Norwalk also participated in the United Way Diaper Drive, and collected over 31,000 diapers that were donated to The Diaper Bank.

“Thank you to the 49 companies that collected diapers in support of The Diaper Bank at over 68 sites that will be distributed to families in need across Greater New Haven. in support of The Diaper Bank to be distributed to families and children in need. We more than doubled our original, ambitious goal of 50,000 diapers! This is a huge benefit for families,” noted Amy Casavina Hall, Director of Community Impact at United Way of Greater New Haven “whose children cannot attend childcare unless the family can supply diapers. A lack of diapers can jeopardize a family’s ability to remain economically stable, as well as their child’s health.”

The following are all the companies who helped make the Diaper Drive possible and helped us reach over 100,000 diapers. Admission is free and open to the public.

Lily Koppel, who writes for the New York Times and other publications, found an old red leather diary in a dumpster in New York. Peaked by curiosity, she opened it and found that it was written by Florence Wolfson in the 1930’s. This journal chronicled 5 years of daily activities, thoughts, and emotions without missing one day of a teenager’s life living in the big city. Lily, an inspired writer, decided to hire a private investigator to find out who this old diary with such extraordinary stories belonged to. She found Florence Wolfson, now Florence Howitt, a 90 year old woman living in Connecticut. Florence was thrilled to relive her most intimate details of her life as she read this 75 year old diary, thought to be lost forever. After spending much time with Florence, Lily has written a book, Red Leather Diary, which includes diary entries, interviews, anecdotes, and more.

The JCC is located at 360 Amity Road in Woodbridge. CareSource also had impressive growth. Margaret Firla, the Interim President and CEO of VNA/SCC stated, “In our region’s highly competitive home health care market, this is a true testament to how hard our staff worked to provide not only exceptional care and service, but enhance our mission. The partners who are receiving awards at our annual meeting have helped us to be not only innovative, but also financially sound. As a non-profit organization, we are committed to our mission to the community and the best way we know how to ensure continuing that mission is to look for new ways to leverage our clinical expertise with responsible stewardship of the assets that we have. Our annual meeting will be a celebration of just that.”

Information regarding attending the annual meeting and sponsorship opportunities can be found at www.vnascc.org or by calling Vilma Irizarry at 203.859.6051.

The awards that will be given are as follows:
Home Care Partnership Award – Dorothy I. Baker, RN-CS, PhD, Yale School of Medicine
In Connecticut, falls accounted for 56.2% of all unintentional injury hospitalizations from 2000-2004, with an associated cost of $203.6 million. Of those who fall, 33-60% will require long-term nursing care and 15-25% will die within a year. Home care patients are at significant risk for falls. According to Dr. Baker, of the 210 home care agencies with the lowest re-hospitalization rates in the country, fall prevention was the #1 strategy for intervention. Dr. Baker has brought a highly developed fall prevention program to VNA/SCC and, through her guidance, has assisted the agency in incorporating it as part of an overall plan of care for all patients.

Community Partnership Award – Juliette M. Shellman, PhD, APRN-BC, Yale School of Nursing
The Carelink program is a collaborative effort with the Yale School of Nursing and Southern Connecticut State University School of Nursing, in which student nurses follow discharged VNA/SCC patients. These are patients who no longer have a skilled need for home health care services, but who are at risk for recidivism. Dr. Shellman was instrumental in bringing this program to VNA/SCC, having had success with a similar program with the UConn School of Nursing and a New Britain based VNA. The program involves fall prevention, reminiscence therapy and medication education. Health literacy education is a primary feature of the success of this program.

Volunteer Partnership Award – VNA Health Systems Board of Directors: Dr. Ellen Russell Beatty, Southern Connecticut State University, Chair; Professor Anne Barker, Sacred Heart University; Victoria DiSesa, DiSesa & DiSesa; Lucy Lucker, Yale University Health System; Laura Macaluso, Eastern Connecticut Health Network; Robert H. During the last year they have devoted an extraordinary level of time, leadership and support to the organization as it has undergone sweeping change. Their involvement has
gone above and beyond what would normally be required as the home care industry has experienced turbulent change. Through their leadership, the VNA/SCC restructured its operations, streamlined its systems and saw a one-year financial turnaround of $500,000. This was a swift and decisive response to industry and marketplace change.

Founded in 1904, the VNA/SCC, the original VNA of New Haven, Milford and the Valley, is a state licensed, non-profit, community based home health care agency. The agency provides care in Greater New Haven, Milford, The Valley, as well as Shoreline communities. The VNA/SCC staff consists of highly skilled nurses, therapists, medical social workers and home health aides. A vital resource to the communities they serve, the VNA/SCC provides a wide range of community programs, immunization clinics, well-child clinics, the Nurturing Families Network and subsidized care to those who are in need. Private duty home care, geriatric care management services, newborn care services and live-in aides are available through their affiliate, CareSource, Inc.
